Founded Huawei in Shenzhen in 1987 reselling telephone switches, and built the largest supplier of telecommunications equipment on earth. US restrictions from 2019 cut the company off from advanced chips and Google’s Android services, and the response was to fund substitutes in the open: HarmonyOS, and openEuler and openGauss handed to a Chinese open source foundation.
