Escaped Hungary in 1956, joined Intel as its first hire, and as CEO from 1987 to 1998 pushed the company out of the memory business it was founded on and into microprocessors, after Japanese competitors made DRAM unprofitable. He wrote the discipline up in High Output Management and Only the Paranoid Survive. Intel’s revenue grew roughly tenfold on his watch.
