Wrote what is generally considered the first assembly language, for the ARC2 and later APE(X)C machines at Birkbeck, and the assembler to go with it. Co-wrote some of the earliest books on how to program and design these machines, and did early work applying neural network ideas to character recognition in the late 1950s.
