Co-invented the silicon integrated circuit at Fairchild, independently of Jack Kilby at Texas Instruments, then co-founded Intel with Gordon Moore in 1968 to build memory and, later, microprocessors. He ran it with the open-plan, no-reserved-parking informality that became the industry’s house style. He was called the Mayor of Silicon Valley, and the eight who walked out of Shockley Semiconductor with him seeded most of what followed.
