Started HP in a Palo Alto garage in 1939 with Bill Hewlett and $538, and grew it into the template every Valley company copied: engineers running engineering, profit sharing, and an across-the-board pay cut rather than layoffs in a downturn. He set the practice down late in life as The HP Way. The garage is now a California historical landmark.
