Scouting report
One of the Berkeley AMPLab researchers behind Apache Spark, which replaced MapReduce as the default way to process large datasets, and CEO of Databricks since 2016. The company has kept releasing the substrate rather than hoarding it: Delta Lake, MLflow, Unity Catalog and the Dolly models were all open-sourced, and it bought MosaicML and Tabular to keep the open table format from fragmenting.
Curator’s note
A professor who turned the lab’s output into a platform without closing the source.
